Mission and Vision

The Exploration Systems Projects (ESP) team has developed mission and vision statements to communicate its role and responsibility, as well as aid in the identification and implementation of opportunities in all phases of the Vision for Space Exploration where GSFC can make a positive contribution.

ESP Mission Statement:

The mission of the ESP is to identify, communicate, and implement Goddard’s contribution to NASA’s Exploration and Constellation initiatives by leveraging Goddard’s expertise in the development and management of space flight missions to further the Nation’s vision for space exploration.

ESP’s mission encompasses three focus areas:

  1. Leveraging Competencies: Drawing upon our relationships and mission experience, ESP will lead the identification of strategic opportunities where the Center’s participation can allow us to make meaningful contributions through the application of its proficient workforce and facilities.
  2. Strategic Communications: ESP is responsible for coordinating and communicating information within GSFC about the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD), the Constellation Program, and our other customers in order to raise workforce awareness about the Agency’s plans for space exploration and how GSFC is contributing. Through structured and frequent communications we channel the natural excitement and enthusiasm of the Goddard workforce towards the Nation’s exploration goals.
  3. Delivering on our Commitments: The ESP team is committed to keeping the agreements we make. We will deliver the systems and products on cost and on schedule while meeting or exceeding our customers’ requirements.

ESP Vision Statement:

Through a dedicated team providing quality services, the ESP is the focal point enabling Goddard to be a key strategic partner for implementing engineering excellence, mission management, and scientific discovery in support of NASA’s Exploration and Constellation initiatives.

This vision statement articulates a clear and concise “3 to 5 year incremental state” for GSFC as we successfully execute our Mission. Our aim of enabling GSFC to become a key strategic partner arises from the knowledge that our workforce possesses unique capabilities in engineering, mission management, and scientific discovery. These capabilities dovetail with the Exploration and Constellation initiatives that together will enable NASA to achieve the goal of replacing the Space Shuttle, returning humans to the Moon, and extending our presence to Mars.
